Guide to pdf page numbers
Add numbers for easy reference
Page numbers help readers reference specific sections in reports, proposals, study materials, or meeting documents. Enter the required starting number; Subsequent pages will be numbered sequentially. The tool places a number in the bottom right area and applies it to all PDF pages, including the cover and splash page.
If the document uses existing print numbers, check whether the new numbers overlap. For manuscripts with roman numbered introductory pages or unnumbered covers, this feature may not be flexible enough because it does not provide separate rules for each section. Consider preparing documents from source files if the academic format or publisher has special rules.
Match the number with the final content
Open the results and check the first page, pages with footers or notes, and the last page. Make sure the labels are within the margins and do not cover the text. The added numbers indicate the physical order of the PDF, not the chapter numbers printed in the content. If you delete or insert a page later, the existing numbers are not automatically updated.
The resulting file is a new copy. Save the original PDF in case you need to repeat with another starting number. For digitally signed documents, changes to the content may invalidate the signature; request a new signature after final page setup if your organization's processes require it.
Additional limits and checks
Numbers are placed at the bottom right on each page and follow the starting number you chose. The tool cannot skip covers or set different numbering per chapter. If the organization requests a specific format, such as Roman numbers for an introduction, number them according to the source template and check the results against those guidelines.
